The Question

I can't be about to do this!
My god! What was I thinking?
As I watch you walking ever closer,
My heart continues its downward sinking.
Then you're here! No!
Of course, you speak
Then suddenly
My heart hits my feet.
What do I say?
I'll start with "Hello!"
Then, after that,
We'll see where it goes.
The conversation begins, continues,
And then draws nigh,
And I still haven't asked
the question running through my mind.
You turn to walk away,
Suddenly I call out your name.
We draw close . . .
Damn I must be insane!
Suddenly, without thinking, I ask, and then
Across your face comes a beautiful smile
And across your lips
"Boy, that took awhile!"
